Video Description:
http://www.edge-online.com/blogs/the-power-tangential-learning
Episode Three in my series of video "lectures," made in association with Edge.
I'm pleased to introduce game designer James Portnow, cofounder of Divide By Zero Games. He and I will be partnering up to bring you these lectures from here on.
Loosely modeled after Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw's Zero Punctuation reviews. For the first time, NOT made to be presented on screen in the classroom.
I can be reached at floydo_animation at yahoo dot com.
James can be reached at jportnow at gmail dot com.

I completely agree ... ( 1 month ago by drangeved)
I completely agree with your position on this topic. But I there was one thing I really wanted to see discussed that wasn't. Psychology. Isn't psychology a subject in itself that could be delved into in games? Sure, when psychology is implemented it usually gets confused with a games storyline and not learning experience but it is still a subject that could be heavily used in any video game. What are your thoughts?
there are some fun ... ( 1 month ago by dtpheif)
there are some fun games that have hidden values in them, for example the game MW2, if you die a lot, and i do (bad at the game) about 1/3 of the quotes have to do with revenge, and the line, "history is written by the victor" is used over and over, and btw i did learn more about ww2 after playing call of duty 2, so your very right
I might be late in ... ( 1 month ago by Kain5th)
I might be late in the game in mentioning this, but one rpg that really encompasses this tangential learning idea is Xenogears. From Freudian psychology to philosophy to religion that game really gets you wanting to learn about a lot of those things.

Yeah, stuff like that has happened to me before. The biggest example is that I probably wouldn't have learned what string theory was if it wasn't one of the themes in the Half-Life games. So, yeah, games taught me about QUANTUM MECHANICS. I'd say that's pretty damn educational.

I learned how a nuclear explosion works from the first fallout...Its true, I learn so much from games..Hell, FF7 taught me how to read, no kidding; screw phonics go Final Fantasy
Your talking about ... ( 4 weeks ago by 0CoffeeBlack0)
Your talking about linking Wikipedia into PC games as a cost effective way to make games educational reminded me that Arenanet (makers of Guild Wars) did just that when they decided to create a guide for their game. Instead of creating an in game codex they made it so their in game help function takes you to their wikia, a guide that can be maintained by the fans. Since it is in browser, players can also search for references in the game w/out stopping their gaming.

I got interested in ... ( 3 weeks ago by Tenkagethewise)
I got interested in the Middle Ages thanks to Age of Empires 2 when I was in the 3rd grade, and through that I learned Mythology, then that got me interested in Japanese Culture which moved me into JRPG's which thanks to their compelling stories got me into Philosphy, so you see, I learned so many things started from that one game I ordered from my Book Order Slip in Elementary School ^_^ Lets face it, some games do it.

Puzzle games teach you some critical thinking skills, along with basic logic.
Also, if the game has a story which has a moral, then it could be said to have taught that bit of morality.

The Total War ... ( 2 weeks ago by ARX78)
The Total War series really took advantage of this kind of learning. Every loading screen featured famous and insightful quotations from the era of the game spoken/written by famous and not so famous people throughout history. They improved immersion as well as adding a mature element to a game which is steeped in historical fact that Hollywood films so frequently avoid. Sure, it's a game in the end, but it's a game that educates aswell as entertains.

Im ashamed to admit that This is the last of your clips I watched due to the title because this IMO is one of your best and most insightful clips. The Loading screen idea which I have seen before is an ingenious idea for learning, Kind of like facts underneath bottle caps.
